Encouraging Walking & Cycling
We have a strong interest and expertise in walking and cycling based on extensive experience of policies and interventions to maximise the take-up of these genuinely sustainable modes of transport.
This experience has included:
- A 3 month study visit and discussion of policy with Danish transport researchers and professions
- Two years secondment to the Ministry of Transport of the State of North Rhine Westphalia in Duesseldorf, Germany
- Three consultancy trips to Australia at the invitation of state and federal government to advise on how to increase walking and cycling in a very car dependent society
- Advisor to the Lancaster Cycling demonstration Town project which is committed to doubling cycling levels over a 3 year period
Harvesting the many benefits of walking and cycling for health, climate change, liveable cities and fiscal prudence requires:
- Detailed work with citizens to identify barriers and remove them
- Detailed attention to improving infrastructure
- Detailed attention to reducing the volume and speed and intrusiveness of car traffic
- Detailed attention to road safety
